Do you believe in yourself when facing life’s challenges? From financial struggles to career doubts, it’s easy to lose confidence. However, the story of Phineas Taylor Barnum shows the power of unwavering self-belief. Despite setbacks like his father’s death and financial ruin, Barnum persevered, creating the iconic Barnum & Bailey Circus. His success illustrates how self-confidence, resilience, and a clear vision can turn adversity into opportunity. Believe in yourself, stay determined, and help others along the way. Learn how self-belief can transform obstacles into success and leave a lasting impact on your future.
Do you still believe in yourself every day?
Do you have rock-solid confidence in your future and that of your family? Have you planned and arranged everything in advance? Are your insurance policies up to date? Do you have a boss who will never fire you, or do you sometimes have doubts? You want a windshield, but you lack the necessary resources. A new colleague arrives at work with a lot of knowledge and charm who threatens to push you from your place. Your partner thinks you work too much and feels lonely. You will soon have to renew your mortgage, but interest rates are developing faster than you thought possible.
Do you believe in yourself?
These are all things that could happen to us and could make us insecure. But imagine that you have the drive to always keep going, despite all the setbacks that cannot be planned in advance. Imagine that you are the person without doubt, who just carries out everything that comes into your head, and that it almost all works out?
This happened to Phineas Taylor Barnum (1810-1891), a man born in Bridgeport, America. Phineas was 15 years old when his father died, and he took care of his mother and his five sisters. He had different jobs but continued to believe in himself. When he was 19, he married and moved to New York. He and his wife had four daughters. Phineas followed his dream of being able to entertain people.
Do you know the power off believe?
When his employer, a shipping company, went bankrupt due to economic developments in the world, he used this opportunity by temporarily pretending to be the owner of the bankrupt estate. He received a loan from a bank (not legally) with which he bought the “John Scudder’s” building, a five-story marble building filled with mostly stuffed animals. He decorated that building as a cabinet of curiosities with all kinds of special people (pernicious). Together with these people he built the popular Barnum circus. The later “Barnum and Bailey” became one of the most successful circuses in the world. I know we now think differently (I do too) about circuses and especially about the animals and people who were often abused for the show.
How can we help each other?
But it is funny to note that when the circus burned down completely due to a fatal accident, the “employees” asked Barnum to rebuild it. They had found a home where every “staff member” respected each other for who he or she was, a human being! Fortunately, Barnum also had a job.
“Marketing manager” still had some money that he also wanted to invest in the new project.
I think Barnum is a good example of a person with a healthy dose of self-confidence, and probably also a lot of luck, who never forgot to believe in himself and walked his own path. Believe in yourself, even when things are not going well, and help those who are less fortunate due to insurmountable circumstances.
